The Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) has hired Danny Sales as head baseball coach and Alex Syum as men's head basketball coach. Both hires bring previous experience in coaching and both are alumni of the community college.
Last spring, Sales served as the school's interim baseball head coach when former head coach Bryan Donohue stepped down. After a national search, Sales was selected to take over the full responsibilities of head coach. Sales is only the fourth baseball head coach in Mt. Hood's program following Donohue, Gabe Sandy and Dale Stebbins. 
As a Saints pitcher in the mid-2000s, Danny returns to MHCC with experience as pitching coach for the Bend Elks of the West Coast League. He also held coaching positions at Thurston High School as assistant coach (2008-2013) and most recently as the head coach at South Eugene High School from 2014 to 2021.
"We have been fortunate to have only four head coaches throughout the history of our baseball program, which I believe has contributed to our success," said Kim Hyatt, MHCC Athletic Director. "All the gentlemen that have overseen this program have been excellent coaches and leaders and we are excited to have someone like Danny to step into this role.? He did an excellent job this past spring stepping up in a difficult situation and led us to the NWAC Championship Game. He has also been someone that we could count on for recommending students to our program who were not only outstanding baseball players but awesome, young men." 
Syum returns to MHCC after serving as assistant basketball coach at Clackamas Community College. Syum brings an extensive knowledge of the sport having served as head coach for the Singapore National Basketball Team. He was also the head coach and head of player development for both Fastbreak Basketball Club and the United World College of Southeast Asia. Currently, Syum is a basketball ambassador to the African country of Eritrea where he assists in structuring, coordinating and scheduling basketball camps.
"Alex is a gentleman of high integrity, and we are so excited to have him as a part of our program.? He brings a lot of great experience to our program having coached and played in the NWAC as well as some international coaching experience," Hyatt said. "Alex has great energy and has demonstrated a commitment to the academic success of our students and engaging with our community."
