For the second year in a row, Jefferson County Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are selling wreaths to lay on the graves of fallen veterans this Christmas. Dec. 17, local scouts will join other clubs around the country in a ceremony as they lay wreaths and Mt. Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. “It teaches kids about honoring our veterans and their families,” said Jefferson County Boy Scouts Chair Lorraine Martinelli. “This shows respect to them and their families by not letting their memory die.” Jefferson County has 36 Cub Scouts and nine boy scouts, all selling wreath sponsorships at $15 each. The club gets to keep $5 from each sale.
People buy sponsorships, not the wreath itself. They pay for the wreaths the scouts put on the graves.
Last year the club sold 100 sponsorships, but the cemetery has 600 graves. “We’re hoping to grow it,” Martinelli said. People who buy sponsorships can designate which grave they’d like their wreath to decorate. “I love that people can specify which grave it goes onto,” said Martinelli. “Because we’re small we can do that.” Order forms will be available at the Jefferson County Community Center, the Madras Airport Office, Jefferson County-Madras Chamber of Commerce, and the Madras Pioneer.
