It is very important to understand that a continuous transformation is required in the courses and the education system with the continuously changing technology environment
Over the last decade, India’s educational system has been reformed significantly, which is a good sign. These reforms have been multi-faceted. How students engage with the educational content has transformed as a result of the introduction of blended learning, online courses and experiential learning. The profile of teachers has changed from knowledge providers to knowledge facilitators. The learning spaces have deep technology integration. Even the examination process in majority of the programs has become online now. A survey suggests that around 82 per cent of people have partially or completely switched to online examination process.
India’s educational system has been influenced by these changes. National Education Policy 2020 has made explicit contributions to include online learning in all national education initiatives. Even the classroom learning experiences have transformed a lot now. Among the few notable changes in the classroom learning is the introduction of smart technologies and tools, like smart screens, in classrooms. The teachers don’t use Chalk and Talk method anymore. They use interactive learning material, and video-based, graphics-based content to make learning more engaging, interesting and beneficial.
Another change is the easy availability of the learning content online. Various online channels have come up with free content for all the courses. Initiatives like E-Pathshala, online NCERT books, educational TV channels, NPTEL have started providing expert content to everyone for free.
By 2032, the digital education process will have seen significant innovation throughout the world. It will create new learning opportunities and research opportunities. Furthermore, it is now apparent that the aspirants want concrete results from the learning and training, which suggests that they virtually expect a job guarantee.
It is very important to understand that a continuous transformation is required in the courses and the education system with the continuously changing technology environment. There are tremendous opportunities available for the students that need to be introduced upfront in the education curriculum. They should not only be made aware of a variety of other employment opportunities, but effective courses must be introduced in the school education itself.
The educational alternatives available to students must also change to reflect the times. Now is the time to reevaluate current initiatives and, if required, revamp them. Another development that is earnestly required is the capacity to finish a course with adaptability letting the students have a greater say in choosing their learning trajectories and deciding the pace of learning through self-paced learning modules. Most importantly, the future of education lies in role-based or skill-based learning rather than mere academic expertise.
It is expected that there should be a quick growth of skill-based courses like public relations, digital marketing, content creation, corporate communication, data analytics etc. The government of India is focusing extensively on making skill-based learning available to the masses with their SWAYAM program which is initiated and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of NEP, viz, access, equity and quality. The SWAYAM portal has almost 2,000 courses that students may readily access to acquire new ideas.
The new-age curricula must also recognise the importance of project-based education. Project-based learning is a method of education that focuses on tasks/assignments/projects to be completed by students, individually or in groups. Such methods help students to explore, create, innovate, solve problems and discover their personal interests and calling during the process.
Such a learning methodology builds an entrepreneurial mindset in the students and that will certainly help in not only improving the level and quality of education, but also spur economic development of the country. The strength of India’s future lies in education and the adaptability of the institutions in incorporating courses and curricula that cater to the exigencies of Industry 4.0.
