‘Twas the day before Christmas, and all through hockey, every GM was calling, even Lamoriello. The NHL rosters, like our bones, are frozen, but on the 27th, there could be some exciting movement on the NHL trade front. The Toronto Maple Leafs are big-game hunting for a top-six forward. Alex Ovechkin passed Gordie Howe and claimed second on the NHL All-Time goals list, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are playing exceptionally well … until they get to overtime.
Sorry, no GM’s name rhymes with “mouse.”
For National Hockey Now, yesterday was one of those days. It seemed problems and issues sprang out of nowhere. It was a long day on Zoom, the phone, email, and text. Just when one issue was closed, two bigger ones popped up.
I didn’t even realize it was 7 p.m. I was still in sweatpants and had not even had coffee or lunch. My stomach loudly let me know it was time to eat. Now. So, I took a walk to my local spot. That was quickly the worst decision I made all day. Holy mother of God! That wind-chill may have been the worst I’ve ever felt; worse than my three weeks in Grand Forks, ND, when it was minus-54, and recently in Winnipeg on the first below-zero days of the year.
Seriously, stay inside. If you’re going to the Steelers game, wrap every inch of yourself. The NFL should consider postponing. There’s no reason to put players and fans through that except for TV dollars. They’re tough, yeah, yeah.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Simple question. Not so simple answers. Why do the Penguins have such an awful overtime record? Pittsburgh Penguins analysis.
The PHN Blog deals with the Penguins’ anger over the Carolina loss and the Penguins’ NHL trade deadline primer.

Steelers Now:
The Steelers will hold a public funeral viewing at Acrisure Stadium on Tuesday for Franco Harris.
To football, the cold weather will be the first test for gloves and Kenny Pickett‘s hands.
Those boneheaded penalties. The NFL fined Diontae Johnson and Marcus Allen.
After waiving Deigo Castillo, the Pirates traded him on Friday.
More from John Perrotto — An Andrew McCutchen reunion makes sense — and doesn’t — for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Washington Hockey Now: It’s a pretty big deal, and “it’s a miracle.” Truly incredible — No. 802 and second place all-time for Alex Ovechkin.
Watch Ovechkin’s emotional speech to the Washington Capitals locker room.
It was also a scary scene in Washington D.C., as John Carlson was hit in the head by a slap shot and taken to the hospital. Washington Capitals news.
It’s funny when Malkin takes one for a goal off his leg. It’s not so funny when it’s higher. Our best to Carlson.
Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs made a minor trade before the roster freeze this week, but Luke Fox reports the Maple Leafs have much bigger targets in the NHL trade market. The Maple Leafs are big-game hunting.
Montreal: Most teams hit the NHL trade market looking for veteran help. The Montreal Canadiens have those veterans, and they want prospects at key positions in return. Canadiens trade talk.
Florida: Matthew Tkachuk wasn’t happy. The Panthers are outside of the playoff seeds. Tkachuk called out his Florida Panthers.
Colorado Hockey Now: The Stanley Cup champs haven’t had the best first half. Injuries and maybe a Cup hangover, but they had a “guts all over the place” victory over Nashville. Colorado Avalanche win.

Perhaps former Penguins defenseman Paul Laus will be an NHL GM someday, and you can do the entire poem.
