Covid cases in the south west have seen one of the highest rises in the UK this week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that the R rate has jumped from 1.1 to 1.3, with a growth rate per day that has changed from +2% to +5%. In Gloucestershire, the region has seen an increase from the previous week, according to the latest data.
The latest figures released by the UKHSA on Thursday, December 22 show a total of 501 new cases recorded in Gloucestershire, an increase of 22 per cent on the previous week. This brings the total number of cases in the county to 212,759 since records began.

England as a whole has recorded 508 deaths within 28 days of a positive test in the past seven days. This brings the total deaths since records began in the country to 175,007, and is a two per cent rise from the previous week.
In the south west, 69 deaths were recorded in the last seven days, which is a 23 per cent rise from last week. The number of deaths has fallen nationally with 596 in total.
