LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Fees for parking in downtown La Crosse will change in 2023.
The city’s Board of Public Works approved a change to parking ramp fees on Monday.
Currently, on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., drivers can park in ramps for free for the first three hours. Every hour after costs $1. The maximum fee is $8 per day.
The new fee structure takes away those free hours. Drivers will pay $1 per hour during those daytime hours on weekdays.
There are no changes to free parking on weekends or from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
According to the city, by allowing 3 hours of free parking, it loses roughly $13,860 a year.
Assistant Chief Jason Melby of the La Crosse Police Department says the new fee structure allows the city’s parking utility to keep up with ramp maintenance.
“It’s self-funded, so the maintenance of the parking ramps, the staffing to clean them, to maintain them, to make repairs, is all funded through … user fees of the parking ramps or parking citations,” said Melby.
The city needs time to change the parking ramp systems and update signage.
Melby says he expects the new fees to start in February or early March.
